BOOMSMA GENEVER, HOLLAND Family-owned Boomsma is the most traditional of the Dutch Genever-style gins made from malted barley distillate and a delicate juniper berry infusion. Jonge Gin #133613 / 750ml / $17.33 Light and elegant... The palate is what sets this genever apart from the average gin: though the botanicals are delicate and subtle, this is a satisfyingly full-bodied yet incredibly smooth spirit. Its delicate blend of botanicals is best savored on the rocks, though it also makes an excellent Martini or Gin and Tonic. 90pts Excellent/ Highly Recommended, Wine Enthusiast A rich, weighty, full-bodied spirit crafted with wheat spirit, malt distillate, and oak barrel aging. While it displays all the juniper notes you could hope for in a genever, it also integrates rich vanilla, apple, and baking spice notes. 94pts Excellent/Highly Recommended, Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2016 BRISTOW USA, MISSISSIPPI In exchange for his granddaughter’s hand in marriage, a curious young bloke presented his new grandfather-in-law, Judge, with a bottle of gin. The gin was triple distilled with a curious blend of spices. The Judge was tickled by the gin and insisted his grandson-in-law provide him with a regular allocation of the toothsome spirit. With that encouraging nod, Bristow Gin was born and went on to live most happily ever after. Gin #677365 / 750ml / $29.59 Produced using Cathead vodka as a base, 10 different botanicals are macerated for two weeks until a consistent flavor profile has been reached. After a second distillation the proof is slowly lowered to 94, and the gin is rested in stainless steel for 3 weeks prior to bottling to let the flavors mend. The sweet aroma offers candied lemon peel and coriander seed. The palate follows through with lots of coriander up front, plus a citrusy hint and juniper, anise and pine. 93pts Beverage Testing Institute “Spirit of the Year” Wine & Spirits Reserve Barrel Aged Gin #978673 / 750ml / $49.99 Bristow Reserve spends 1 year in new 53 gallon American oak barrels, char #3. Reminiscent of gingerbread, this honey-hued gin has a sweet scent and bold palate that shows vanilla bean, cinnamon, clove, cardamom and a hint of molasses, finishing with a sarsaparilla-like roots-and-bark finish. Even at 113 proof this gin is very approachable, and still keeps the character if it’s Bristow Gin base. 93pts Wine Enthusiast Oude Fine Old Genever #12263 7/ 750ml / $19.99

Handcrafted in very small batches on a handhammered gin-head pot still. “Light, warm Dutch licorice comes through on the nose and palate, lightened by cardamom and a sweet lemon zest note. Spicy and intriguing.” 91pts Wine Enthusiast Barrel Aged Gin #803140 / 750ml / $33.33 The Barrel Aged Gin is one of their experimental gin products where they age the gin in the same manner and barrels that their spiced rum employs. Look for additional notes of oak, sweetness, and spice. Recommended as an excellent sipping gin. Double Gold The Fifty Best Genever Gin #529860 / 750ml / $31.99
A big and bold American take on the classic Dutch spirit. Malty, but with a citrus kick and notes of spices, this is an interesting take on the father of modern-day gin. Double Gold San Francisco World Spirits Competition
Top10 GinBotanicals What these top 10 botanicals have in common is that they’ve all been used in gins for centuries, some even common in 17th and 18th century gins. #1 JUNIPER Juniper could be found at Paloelithic sites across Europe 10,000 years ago. People burnt juniper for its distinctive piney aroma. There are believed to be somewhere between 50–67 species of juniper in the world. According to E.U. law, gin must be predominantly flavored by Juniprus communis. U.S. laws don’t specify the species. As it only says “juniper berries,” Juniper is what gives gin its distinctive flavor. Without juniper… you don’t have gin. When you have juniper, technically, you have gin.
