MCCARTHY’S USA , OREGON The First American Single Malt. Blend old-world tradition with Oregon ingenuity and you get McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt Whiskey. Over 25 years ago, founder Steve McCarthy returned from a trip to Ireland determined to make his own single malt. Not only did he succeed, but in doing so ignited the craft American Single Malt Revolution.
J. RIEGER & CO USA, MISSOURI J Rieger & Co pays tribute our historic brand through resurrecting the use of adding Sherry to American Whiskey, a common practice known as “rectification” in the late 1800s, but that was lost after Prohibition. Our goal is to showcase the extraordinary quality of American Whiskey in our blend, while introducing a classic element in the production process that harkens back to the 1880s. As the first producer to revitalize the practice of adding Sherry into whiskey, we’ve created a new classification of Kansas City Whiskey is a blend of Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Light Corn Whiskey, and Straight Rye Whiskey, all aged at least 4 years, as well as a small amount of 15-year-old Oloroso Sherry from the Williams & Humbert Bodega in Jerez. American Single Malt McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt Whiskey 85PF / 750ML
McCarthy’s Oregon Single Malt Whiskey is distilled in a Holstein pot still using one pass distillation from a fermented mash of 100% peat malted barley from Scotland. The spirit is then barrel-aged in 3 year air-dried Oregon Oak barrels and bottled at 85 proof without chill
filtration. The result is a remarkably complex and delicate peated single malt. A robust and smoky nose and taste is complemented by hints of dried fruit, plum and a warm finish of honey and delicate peat. 91pt Whiskey Advocate ‘23 Gold SF World Spirits Competition ‘22 McCarthy’s 6YR Oregon Single Malt 100PF / 750ML The balance of peat and oak, the subtle sweetness that lets you in the door and the tempting smell of a nearby campfire, all balance out to make an exceptional whiskey. 92pt Whiskey Advocate ‘23 92pt Ultimate Spirits Challenge ‘23 McCarthy’s 6YR PX Cask Finish 112PF / 750ML
Warm saddle leather and sweet tobacco on the introduction. Slowly reshaping into dark hazelnut butter and bergamot tea; the smell centering around the lingering smoke of cold campfire embers.Surprisingly rich with a bright piquant start. The jammified fruit of the sherry is the opening act for a deeper spice filled middle as chicory and bitter chocolate find their home in the second act. These initial flavors enjoy a long stay, evaporating only for the smoke and sawdust that live in the heart of this well looked after whiskey. McCarthy’s 6YR Oloroso Finish 112PF / 750ML Cherry sawdust, warm pine pitch and marsh grass. A nose that is light and sunny. Closer to warm lakeside days than cold forest nights. The aroma hits with high summer energy and optimism making it unique compared to other McCarthys expressions. Light and juicy with a good deal of burned sugar and citrus. Back flavors of salt brine and sea spray make this the whiskey version of camping on the Oregon coast. To others it’s as comforting as early morning diners and French toast with coffee. The addition of an ice cube exposes the whiskey’s sweeter tones. With a baseline of sarsaparilla root and chicory, the higher tones of toasted cereal grain, orange peel and maple syrup definitely shine. 95pt Whiskey Advocate ‘23
