ALICE, SANDRA & ANDREA TAVARES Quinta de Chocapalha Lisboa, Portugal
ILSE BODENSTEIN Prager Wachau, Austria
Enchanted by the region’s magic after years of travelling to Tuscany as a holiday destination, Carla Prospero purchased a small farm in Bolgheri in 2003: 3.8 hectares along the Via Bolgherese in the heart of the appellation. Here, shaded by Bolgheri’s picturesque cypress trees, olive groves alternate with vineyards planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Today, Carla shares the winery management and her dream with her son and daughter, Alberto and Nadia Zenato.
With vineyards dating back to the 16th century, the Tavares da Silva family has embarked on a restoration program replanting and regrafting vines with indigenous and international varieties. This effort has paid off, as Quinta de Chocapalha produces wines that boast traditional minerality and elegance, while remaining fresh and fruit forward. Andrea handles marketing and sales, Alice is the manager of wine tourism, and Sandra is the chief winemaker at Chocapalha.
The Pecchenino family has been growing vines in Piedmont for over four generations and made the leap from small wine production to a winery of international recognition under brothers Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino. Focused on the production of high-quality Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and a few other select varietals, Pecchenino’s vines are painstakingly cared for by hand. Lisa, Gaia, and Sofia are next in line to lead this pioneering winery. Sofia recently completed a degree in winemaking.
When Ilse married Toni Bodenstein, the two ushered in a profound change, not only at the Prager winery that Isle inherited from her father, but throughout the Wachau. MADAME MAY-ELIANE DE LENCQUESAING Glenelly Stellenbosch, South Africa
The Garofoli family has been synonymous with winemaking for five generations, making them the oldest producer in Marche with over 150 years of history. Antonio Garofoli began producing wine in 1871, but it was his son Gioacchino who expanded sales across Europe in the 1950s. His grandsons, Carlo and Gianfranco, further advanced the winery. At the foot of the Alps, in the small village of Fläsch, is the gravity flow winery of Daniel and Martha Gantenbein; a marvel of design simplicity, ingenuity and mechanical precision. Daniel and Martha do all of the vineyard and cellar work themselves, by hand. Together, they farm 15 acres of vineyards. Most of the vineyards are planted with Pinot Noir clones from Burgundy. The rest is planted with Chardonnay, as well as a tiny parcel of Riesling, planted with vines sourced from the Mosel.
Francesca Vajra represents the next generation of leadership at her family’s Piedmont estate, blending deep respect for tradition with a modern, outward‑looking vision. Actively involved in all facets of the winery, she helps steward the vineyards, shape the wines’ identity, and share the Vajra story worldwide—ensuring that the family’s values, precision, and passion continue to define every bottle.
