Fuji Blended Whiskey 92PF / 700ML
MT FUJI DISTILLERY CHUBA (TOKAI), SHIZUOKA PREFECTURE The Fuji Gotemba distillery was founded at the height of the Japanese whisky industry in the early 1970s. A multinational corporate collaboration drew up plans to open the distillery, and production began in 1973. The collaboration consisted of Seagram’s from Canada, Chivas Brothers from Scotland, Four Roses distillery from the United States and the Kirin Brewery Company from Japan (who distributed Four Roses products in Japan). The syndicate selected the site as they felt that it had a climate most like Scotland’s. The town of Gotemba is over 2000 feet (610 metres) above sea level and is much cooler and less humid (especially in the summers) than other areas of Japan. The water takes 50 years from snow melt on Mt. Fuji to be filtered and used in our whiskies (malt and grain), making us the gift from Mt. Fuji The distillery was originally called the Gotemba Distillery and changed its name to Fuji Gotemba when it came under the sole ownership of Kirin in 2002. Fuji Gotemba distillery is in the town of Gotemba, which lies at the foot of Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji. It produces both single malt and grain whiskies from imported barley and grain from Scotland and Ireland. There are separate still rooms for the single malt and grain whisky production and Fuji Gotemba is one of the few distilleries in Japan to have its own bottling plant and cooperage. KURAYOSHI JAPAN, TOTTORI PREFECTURE Matsui Shuzou was founded in 1910 and is located in the Tottori Prefecture, northwest of Kyoto, on the shore of the Sea of Japan. Fresh ground water from the wilderness of the Tottori prefecture is a blessing from the earth and is used to bring the Kurayoshi Whisky to proof. It has a very tasty, mellow characteristic, deserving of the name Kurayoshi, the city of water and green. Tottori is known for its soft mineral water and abundance of nature. Kurayoshi 12-year-old Malt Whisky 92PF / 750mL The rich aroma of mixed nuts and heavy malt spread throughout the mouth, giving a sense of the 12-year maturation. Vanilla and raisins with faint smokiness on the palate. Long term aging gives an outstanding balance of tart and sweet. Daisen. The Matsui Single Malt Whisky 96PF / 750mL This Single Malt distilled at the Kurayoshi Distillery is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and then transferred to bourbon barrels that have had the heads swapped out for mizunara oak for the last few months of maturation. Un-chillfiltered, natural color. Matsui Sakura Cask Whisky 96PF / 750mL This Single Malt distilled at the Kurayoshi Distillery is matured in ex-bourbon barrels and then transferred to bourbon barrels that have had the heads swapped out for Sakura wood for the last few months of maturation. Using carefully selected malt whisky and grain whisky, the sweet and refreshing taste of San-In evokes vanilla, pear, and a fruity finish. The mellow taste is further improved by soft spring water from Mt Daisen. Recommended sipped from a white wine glass to enjoy all the flavors and delicate aromas. A blend of three different types of grain whiskies: • Bourbon heavy style using pot stills and column stills. • Canadian style, using a kettle still in a batch process, creating a rich profile. • Scotch style, using five different column stills with continuous distillation for a lighter style. Fuji Single Grain Japanese Whiskey 30yr 92PF / 700ML The ‘Single’ in Single Grain here refers to the fact that this whisky was made at one distillery. The distillery in question is none other than Fuji, located on the foothills of the famous volcano.
Made primarily with corn, finished whisky is a composite of three styles of distillation - American Bourbon, Scotch & Canadian. Fuji leans into the heavier, bolder Bourbon flavors but with the Japanese touch for blending that renders it more subtle and well-integrated and easy to sip. In the best sense it is like a Japanese Bourbon, which makes sense as the parent company here, Kirin, has plenty of experience with Bourbon, being the longtime owners of Four Roses.
This whisky is characterized by mellow sweetness and aroma. The mouth feel is refreshing with a faint fruity sweetness and an ornate, lasting finish. Perfect for any style of drink, on the rocks, high ball, and neat. 87pts Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2021
