BEYOND THE LABEL Dorothy Arzner made history when she became the first woman to direct a sound-synchronized film, Manhattan Cocktail (1928). Her directing career spanned the 1920’s to the early 1940’s where she She secured her reputation by deviating from the classic formulas of Hollywood storylines, and instead portrayed women through complex characterizations rather than as cinematic stereotypes.. She launched the careers of many actresses including Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell and Lucille Ball. A decade later joined the faculty at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film, and Television, and taught a young Francis Ford Coppola and gave him the confidence to become film director
