WHAT ’S NEW in NY?
Gryphon Crest Gryphon Crest represents a new face for the varietal labels from Rudi Wiest Selections. They offer a Pinot Noir from Baden planted on granite. Riesling grown on blue, grey weathered slate is sourced from the Saar (65%) and from the Mosel villages of Piesport and Bernkastel (35%). The Rhinehessen Dry Riesling is sourced from the Grosslage Spielberg vineyard consisting of calcareous dust over light loam with clay silt (90%). Additional fruit is sourced from vines planted on loess loam (10%). Gunther Steinmetz In 1999 Stefan Steinmetz took over the estate from his father Gunther. Grapes are grown on 22 acres surrounding Brauneberg and its neighboring communities. Steinmetz practices traditional winemaking and relies on spontaneous fermentation with (partial) malolactic fermentation. He lets his dry wines stop their fermentation naturally, so they may end up with some residual sugar. He’s perfected this style and the wines have gained in elegance and refinement without losing any of the aromatic presence and complexity. Salvestrin Winery The Salvestrin family has been farming in Napa Valley since 1932. The family arrived from Italy and settled in St. Helena in the mid 1920’s. ¬They purchased the highly-regarded Dr. Crane Vineyard in 1932. John’s son Ed grew grapes for many years and in 1994 he decided to hold back some of the highest quality grapes and released the first vintage of Salvestrin. Today, Richard, representing the third generation, is the current vineyard manager and winemaker. The vineyard is certified Napa Green, fish friendly and has been sustainably farmed for over eighty years. Weingut Joh Jos Prüm
Joh Jos Prüm is without question one of the finest estates in the Mösel. Since 1156 the Prüms have called the village of Wehlen home. Sebastian Alois Prum established it in 1911, but it was under the stewardship of his son Sebastian that the estate really began to hit its stride. Sebastian's son, Manfred, has run the estate since 1969.
The estate has 33.5 acres planted to Riesling on steeply-sloping, Devon schist soils. The majority of the holdings are in the top middle-Mösel sites: Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Graacher Domprobst, Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler. Yields are severely restricted and harvesting o en continues through to late November. The winemaking is meticulous, the estate ferments its Riesling almost exclusively with indigenous yeast and the wines are characterized by their purity of fruit as well as by their distinctive mineral/slate character.
