Poggio Di Sotto

Poggio di Sotto is known in Montalcino for its unique ecological niche of old Sangiovese vineyards (more than 50 years old). Together with the University of Florence 120 unique biotypes of Sangiovese were discovered. This biodiversity is the cornerstone of the unique brightness and complexity that is found in Poggio di Sotto wines and the leader of its distinctive style. Poggio di Sotto was established in 1989 and is located on a hill to the south-east of Montalcino. Since its foundation, the estate has become famous for the high quality of the Sangiovese that it cultivates and has quickly achieved cult status. Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate at the foot of Monte Amiata, the steep vineyards on the south-facing slopes are at altitudes of between 650 and 1300ft (250 to 400m). The stony soils are composed of gravel and clay in the lower sections, as well as sandy loam in the higher areas. Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino DOC Rosso di Montalcino Poggio di Sotto is actually a 3 year old Brunello (Brunellino) which shows to be ready to be bottled earlier than its bigger brother Brunello. The grapes for Rosso di Montalcino are managed in vineyards and cellar with the intention of becoming a Brunello, then after two years of ageing, the casks are taste tested, and some are selected to be bottled as Rosso. The wine has the potential to age like a Brunello.

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino DOCG This wine is produced from vineyards at 660-1,500 feet above sea level, all with varying exposure. The soil is mostly poor and rocky, composed by clay and limestone. The production area is in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, facing the Orcia Valley and the Orcia River. The pruning system is cordon spur, and grapes are harvested by hand in 15-20 kg cases from September 18th to the 28th. Vinification takes place in oak vats, using indigenous yeasts for spontaneous fermentation. The wine goes through long macerations and several pumping-over throughout the day. The wine ages for 42 months in 30 hl Slavonian oak casks.
