Grattamacco

Grattamacco was founded in 1977 and was the second winery of the Bolgheri appellation, following Sassicaia. The winery lies on a rise between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, with a panoramic view of the Tuscan coast. The Grattamacco vineyards are located at about 330 ft. above sea level, in a wonderfully protected plot that spans over one of Bolgheri’s only two hills, and is surrounded by other internationally renowned Bolgheri properties. This area benefits from a dry climate with considerable temperature fluctuations and is famous for its world class wines. The property has been part of the ColleMassari Group since 2002. Grattamacco Bolgheri Vermentino DOC A wine produced from the oldest Vermentino vineyards in Bolgheri, some of which are thirty years old. Located at 330 ft. in elevation, on a natural terrace overlooking the sea. The harvest occurs in September and is strictly done by hand. The vinification takes place ⅔ in barrels and ⅓ in stainless steel. The wine is aged for 8 months in French barrels of various sizes with frequent batonnage of the lees.

Bolgheri Rosso DOC A blend of 60% Cabernet, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, and 10% Sangiovese. Sourced from vineyards at 330 and 660 ft. where the soil is comprised of calcareous sandstone and marl. The climate is typically temperate Mediterranean with frequent sea breezes. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand. Vinification begins with open must fermentation in barrels, then the wine matures for ten months in 2 – 3-year-old barriques, finished by 6 months of bottle ageing before release.

L’Alberello Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC L’Alberello (head-pruned) is the way the vineyards are trained. It is the first head trained vineyard in the Bolgheri area. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot are harvested together on the same day, creating a blend that spontaneously ferments in small oak truncated cone vats with manual punching down and long maceration with indigenous yeast. This wine was aged for 16 months in barriques.

Bolgheri Rosso Superiore DOC Grattamacco’s Bolgheri Rosso Superiore is iconic in Bolgheri, Italy, and beyond. The flagship wine of the estate, this was the second important wine to come from the Bolgheri area following Sassicaia. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 15% Sangiovese. The spontaneous fermentation takes place in open truncated cone-shaped oak vats with frequent and gentle manual punching with indigenous yeast, allowing long macerations and slow release of only fully ripe and noble tannins. This wine was aged for 21 months in french oak barrels.
