Codice Citra

The wines of Codice Citra originate in the vineyards of southern Abruzzo that lie between the Adriatic Sea and the dramatic Apennine Mountains. The strong bond with the territory is evident in the company’s name, chosen by the founding members in 1973. The word Citra is a Latin adverb meaning “beyond,” and was the name afforded to the southernmost of the two Principalities in which Abruzzo was divided before Italy’s unification. Founded in 1973 when small family growers decided to unite to form a winery dedicated to quality, Codice Citra is located in the Abruzzo region in central-eastern Italy. The property, with its 6,000 hectares—14,800 acres—covers the majority of the Chieti province in southern Abruzzo. Since its foundation, Codice Citra has focused on cultivating the most important, indigenous grape varieties within the province of Chieti. They select only the best grapes and approach winemaking with the greatest attention to detail in order to make the highest quality wine of the region. This dedication to one region and its wines is the Code of Citra. Codice Citra’s vineyards have been passed down through generations and have been cared for with love and passion for decades. These are family owned properties, some with only 1 hectare, which create a colorful patchwork of small vineyards stretching north to south along the Adriatic coast and east to west from the sea to the towering Majella Mountain. Constantly ventilated by the local “brezza di terra,” or winds that blow downward from the mountains and inland from the sea, these are some of the healthiest vineyards in all of Italy. Winemaking at Codice Citra is equal parts passion and praxis. Under the executive direction of world- renowned enologist and winery consultant, Riccardo Cotarella, Codice Citra’s head winemaker, Lino Olivastri and his winemaking team, are dedicated to showcasing the quality of their terroir and the individuality of their native varietals.
