Montilla, Spain
Established by Don Diego de Alvear in 1729, and since that time has remained under control of the Alvear family. This is the oldest winery in the region. The Alvear family owns 307.2 acres (128 ha) of vineyards in the DO of Montilla – Moriles. This winery makes all the traditional sherry wine styles, but using 100% Pedro Ximenez, for their sweet and dry. They are known for their Amontillado (meaning in the style of Montilla) and their vintage finos, sweet solera and vintage PX wines. Alvear, Fino NV Subtle delicate wine, delightfully easy to drink. Alvear, Fino en Rama 2008 A rare vintage fino from the second oldest winery in Spain. A dry, Pedro Ximenez wine aged under flor, unfortified. Alvear, Amontillado (Medium Dry) An Amontillado from Montilla, the town that gave the name to this style of fortified wine. Alvear, Carlos VII Amontillado The Alvear house favorite. Dry wine with light chestnut bright gold color. Alvear, Oloroso Asuncion Fortified wine, aged for more than 10 years in oak barrels where no flor develops. In this wine, the Pedro Ximenez reveals a less well-known aspect of its character and its sweetness. It is an extraordinary traverse of the boundary between a sweet and a dry wine. Alvear, Solera Cream When an Oloroso is sweetened with some concentrated Pedro Ximénez sweet wine, it becomes a Montilla Cream, a synonym of dark, full, rich, sweet not cloying wine.
