Location: Entre-Deux-Mers Established: 1524 Principal: StéphaneDefraine (owner &winemaker) Hectares: 49

KEY POINTS: 1. Château de Fontenille is a historic estate in the Entre-Deux- Mers region of Bordeaux where vines have been planted since the 13th century. Belgian-born Stéphane Defraine purchased the estate in 1989 at the age of 33 believing in the potential of Fontenille’s terroir. 2. The soil at Fontenille is well-suited to both red and white varieties. Gravel and clay over limestone favor red grapes while boulbènes, a loamy gravel, benefit white and rosé. The property enjoys one of the highest points in Bordeaux at an elevation of 105 meters and its mild and well-ventilated position help retain freshness in the wines. 3. Stéphane Defraine keeps chemical inputs to a minimum and the estate received Haute Valeur Environmentale (HVE) sustainable farming certification in 2017.
